HEIC to JPG: How to Convert iPhone Photos on Any Device

FlipFiles Pro ยท June 2026 ยท 8 min read

You have taken great photos on your iPhone and now nobody else can open them. Your colleague on Windows gets an error. The website you are uploading to rejects the file. Your old photo printer does not support the format. The culprit is HEIC โ€” Apple's proprietary image format. This guide explains what HEIC is, why Apple uses it, and the best ways to convert it to universally compatible JPG.

What Is HEIC and Why Does Apple Use It?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. Apple introduced HEIC as the default photo format for iPhones starting with iOS 11 in 2017.

Apple switched to HEIC for one main reason: file size. A HEIC image is typically 40-50% smaller than an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality. For a phone that takes many photos per day, this is significant storage savings. A 4MB JPG photo becomes a 2MB HEIC photo with no visible quality difference.

The problem is that HEIC is not universally supported. Windows needs a paid codec from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files natively. Most web platforms, old printers, and non-Apple apps do not support it at all.

Why Browser-Based Converters Fail

HEIC conversion requires the libheif library or similar HEIC decoder to read the file format. This library is not available in browser JavaScript environments โ€” browsers simply cannot decode HEIC files without it. Browser tools that claim to convert HEIC are either converting only simple HEIC files (missing edge cases), running slow server-side code poorly optimised, or failing silently on complex HEIC images.

FlipFiles Pro uses the pillow-heif Python library which wraps libheif โ€” the reference implementation of the HEIC/HEIF standard. It correctly handles all HEIC variants including HDR images, images with depth maps, and burst photo sequences.

Conversion Options

Convert to JPG (Most Compatible)

JPG is supported everywhere โ€” every operating system, every website, every printer, every photo application. Converting HEIC to JPG loses the slight quality advantage of HEIC but gains universal compatibility. FlipFiles Pro converts at 92% quality by default, which is indistinguishable from the original for most purposes.

Convert to PNG (Lossless)

PNG is lossless โ€” no quality is lost in conversion. PNG files are larger than JPG but preserve every pixel perfectly. This is the right choice for screenshots, diagrams, and images that will be further edited or used in design work.

Batch Conversion

On Starter plan and above, FlipFiles Pro supports batch HEIC conversion โ€” upload multiple HEIC files simultaneously and receive all converted JPG files in a single ZIP download. This is far faster than converting photos one by one.

Privacy Note

Your iPhone photos often contain personal content and EXIF metadata (GPS location, device information, timestamps). When you upload to FlipFiles Pro, your photos are processed and deleted within 30 minutes. We strip EXIF data from converted JPG output unless you specifically request it to be preserved.

If you are converting sensitive photos and are uncomfortable with any upload at all, Apple devices can be set to automatically save in JPG format (Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats โ†’ Most Compatible) โ€” this prevents HEIC files from being created in the first place.
